Sugarcoated, is a collection of mixed material paintings that deal into the culture of dangerous dieting and the glamorized obsession of it being built subconsciously into our culture over time. It explores the relationship that dieting culture that was established in the midcentury to today’s world and its connection to the advertising industry’s support in the creation of it. The work is cultivated by the research and influences by pop art, repetitive instances in cultural history, and how advertising has influenced the way dieting culture is being portrayed. Bringing attention to the different aspects of dieting that has been subconsciously implanted in one’s mind and culture, Sugarcoated challenges the audience to confront this nature and in turn begin to identify how they have been a part of it.
